Two-Day Workshop: December 1 & 2; 9:00am - 12:00pm (Virtual)

A strong financial foundation is one of the keys to successful nonprofit management. Join us for an introduction to nonprofit finance that will help you gain an understanding of basic financial information including budgeting, cash flow, financial analysis, sharing with the board, and other issues that affect the running of a nonprofit. There will be hands-on breakout sessions to reinforce the lectures. Since this will be an interactive class, we will be able to discuss particular issues.

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the basics of accounting for nonprofits
  • Learn about the responsibilities and duties of finance departments
  • Have hands-on experience working with budgets, cash flow and other financial topics
  • Have an understanding of automation for finance utilizing QuickBooks.
Finance 101 is ideal for anyone who wants to gain understanding of how the financial side of nonprofits works!

Trainer: John Oppenheim, Accounting and Software ProfessionalJohnO

After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Oppenheim completed his education in Accounting. After college, he spent a year with a major food corporation in the accounting-training program. Using that background and education, John joined a computer company in 1969 as a sales representative. For the past 50 years, he has worked with application software as salesman, manager, and had his own company – all in Accounting software systems.

After a long career dealing with technology and its uses, John was an adjunct professor of Management Information Systems at Pepperdine University and an instructor at Downey Adult School where he created the course "Accounting and Quickbooks". For the past ten years he has been a consultant, working with nonprofits to improve their effectiveness and efficiency through such technologies as donor management software and Quickbooks.

From 2015 to 2017, John was the Chief Operating Officer for Veterans Yoga Project, a nonprofit, and was responsible for all phases of operations, including Accounting. Currently he still consults with nonprofits and volunteers as a yoga instructor at Century Villages at Cabrillo in Long Beach
