Sean Devereaux, Leadership Long Beach

sd headshot 2Sean Devereaux’s nonprofit journey began when he accepted a position at the Aquarium of the Pacific as an Aquarist in 1999. There, he spent nearly a decade working with the animal collections, specializing in the husbandry of North Pacific birds and fishes. During this period, Sean worked closely with the volunteers and interns in the Animal Husbandry Department as their departmental liaison. This provided him a firm foundation in volunteer management allowing him to transition seamlessly into the role of Manager of Volunteer Services in 2007, then promoting to the Director of Volunteer Engagement in 2017. Under his leadership, the Aquarium of the Pacific realized over 2 million hours of volunteer service from over 10,000 volunteers and interns, the largest volunteer program of any Zoo or Aquarium in the world.

Sean has a rich history of community service and leadership, having served on various boards including DOVIA-LA, the AZA, AL!VE, and the Arts Council for Long Beach, among others. He currently sits on the board of Sister Cities of Long Beach. A graduate of the Leadership Long Beach Institute, Sean took on the role of Executive Director in April 2021, leading efforts to revive programs impacted by COVID-19. He is passionate about empowering his community and is dedicated to continuing the legacy of Leadership Long Beach. Sean resides in the Wrigley neighborhood with his husband, Aldo, their chihuahua Lily, and a cat named Nancy. In his free time, he enjoys gardening, reading sci-fi, cooking, and traveling.
